    Artist: Alexander Williams (1846-1930). Born in Monaghan town, Williams was a versatile man who was largely self-taught as an artist. In 1902 Lord Ardilaun granted Williams permission to paint in and around the Muckross Estate.

    Landscape with autumn-coloured trees. A stream, from which two cattle are drinking, is depicted flowing away to bottom left. Dated 1899.

    Artist: Richard H A Willis was born in Dingle, Co. Kerry in 1853 but moved to Cork as a child. There he was apprenticed to architect Arthur Hill c. 1869 and also attended Cork School of Art. Willis attained a scholarship to attend the National Art Training School in South Kensington, London. He excelled as a student and was awarded various medals and prizes. In 1882 he was appointed Headmaster of Manchester School of Art. He 1892 he left this post in order to devote more time to his painting.

    Artist: Edwin Hayes (1819-1904) was born in Bristol but spent much of his childhood living in Dublin, where his love of the sea developed. In 1842 he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and over a 49 year period, from 1855, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. In addition Hayes exhibited with various other British institutes.

    Artist: T. Sautelle Roberts. Born in Waterford City in 1760, T. Sautelle Roberts studied architectural training before becoming a landscape artist like his older brother Thomas. Following the early death of the latter in 1778, Sautelle assumed his brother’s name of Thomas. Well regarded by his fellow artists, T. Sautelle sustained a coaching accident in London in 1818 and was unable to continue painting following damage to his shoulder. He died in 1826.

    Artist: F. Sargent (1837- 1899) was born in London. He initially painted small water-colour portraits before later painting large portraits in oils.

    A marble statue of Lord Ardilaun is also located here in the Maqin Hall, beside the door into the Drawing Room.

    Lord Ardilaun purchased Muckross House and its Estate in November 1899. He was related by marriage to the Herbert family of Muckross.

    Ardilaun’s wife Olivia was a daughter of Jane, Countess of Bantry. Jane was the youngest sister of Colonel Henry Arthur Herbert, the man responsible for building the present Muckross House.

    The Ardilauns spent very little time at Muckross and it was let out on an annual basis as a shooting and fishing lodge. In 1911 Lord Ardilaun sold Muckross House and its Estate to the wealthy American William Bowers Bourn.

    The ship without a mainmast (centre) is probably French and appears to be in the act of striking her colours or surrendering. The ship sailing away from her is a British Navy frigate, probably c. 1780. Battle action is also taking place in the background. It may be that this painting depicts a navel encounter from the Anglo-French War of 1778-1783.

    Artist: Dominic Serres the elder. Signed and dated at lower right ‘D. Serres. 1776.’
    Dominic Serres, a native of Gascony, arrived in England c. 1745. his good manners and naval experience may account for his successful artistic career, as his training was minimal. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy.

    Artist: Robert McInnes (1801-1886). McInnes began his career in Edinburgh before later moving to London.

    Maud married Arthur Rose Vincent in 1910 and the couple were gifted Muckross House as a wedding present by Maud’s parents.

    Ellaline Vincent was the second wife of Brigadier General Berkeley Vincent. His portrait hangs round corner to the left of Ellaline’s.

    Artist: Cecil Stuart Jameson (inscribed in pen on frame at reverse).
    This British Scottish artist (1884-1973) has portraits in several collections, including that of the British National Trust.

    Lady Kitty Edith Ogilvy Vincent was the first wife of Brigadier General Berkeley Vincent.

    Artist: Alfred Jonniaux (lower right).
    Born in Brussles in 1882. He studied at the Academie des Beaux Arts, Brussels and as a draughtsman in Paris before beginning his career as a portrait painter in London. Jonniaux emigrated to America during World War II and became a US citizen in 1946. He died in 1974.

    Artist: William Hoare of Bath c. 1707-1792.
    William Hoare grew up in Suffolk and Berkshire before moving to London to join the studio of Italian painter Giuseppe Grisoni (1699–1769). Hoare accompanied his master when he returned to Italy in 1728. He spent ten years working in the studio of the history painter Francesco Imperiali (1679–1740) in Rome. Hoare formed friendships with many young British aristocrats on the Grand Tour who would later become his patrons.

    This is a bust-length portrait of Arthur William Bourn Vincent depicted facing to the left. Set against a neutral background, Vincent wears a military uniform and looks towards the viewer.

    Arthur W. B. Vincent, known as Billy Vincent (1919-2012), was the son of the last private owners of Muckross House, Maud Bowers Bourn and her husband Arthur Rose Vincent.

    Artist: Signed and dated ‘APAP 1944’ at lower right.
    Probably Willie Apap, the Maltese artist born in Valetta on 26 June 1918. He was the son of Giovanni Apap and his wife Marianne Grimes. The youngest of five siblings, Willie Apap was the brother of acclaimed sculptor Vincent Apap and musician Joseph Apap.

    Willie Apap spent time in Rome and was known for his portraits, religious works and landscapes. He employed the unique technique of bands of ‘strisce’ (bands of light) in his paintings. He died on 3 February 1970. A recent exhibition of Willie Apap’s works was hosted by Rome’s Palazzo Valentini in November 2023.

    Born in Monaghan town in 1846, Williams was a versatile man, who was largely self-taught as an artist. In 1902 Lord Ardilaun granted Williams permission to paint in and around the Muckross Estate. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1870 and 1930.

    Williams’ work can be seen in collections including The Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin and the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork. He died in Dublin in 1930.

    Artist: Nicholas Brennan. Born in Dublin in 1802, Nicholas Brennan was the son of an attorney’s clerk. He exhibited portraits at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1826 and 1852. These included, in 1827, a portrait of Dublin-born writer and scientist Dionysius Lardner. The date of Nicholas Brennan’s death is uncertain.

    Signed ‘Chancellor, Dublin’ in red at lower right. This is probably George Chancellor, who was born in Dublin in 1796. He was the son of John Chancellor, a watch and clock maker based in Dublin.

    George Chancellor was a landscape and miniature painter. He exhibited works at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1828 and again in 1829. George Chancellor died in Dublin in 1861.
