17. Seascape.

Untitled.

The ship without a mainmast (centre) is probably French and appears to be in the act of striking her colours or surrendering. The ship sailing away from her is a British Navy frigate, probably c. 1780. Battle action is also taking place in the background. It may be that this painting depicts a navel encounter from the Anglo-French War of 1778-1783.

Artist: Dominic Serres the elder. Signed and dated at lower right ‘D. Serres. 1776.’
Dominic Serres, a native of Gascony, arrived in England c. 1745. his good manners and naval experience may account for his successful artistic career, as his training was minimal. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy.
