This is a bust-length portrait of Arthur William Bourn Vincent depicted facing to the left. Set against a neutral background, Vincent wears a military uniform and looks towards the viewer.
Arthur W. B. Vincent, known as Billy Vincent (1919-2012), was the son of the last private owners of Muckross House, Maud Bowers Bourn and her husband Arthur Rose Vincent.
Artist: Signed and dated ‘APAP 1944’ at lower right.
Probably Willie Apap, the Maltese artist born in Valetta on 26 June 1918. He was the son of Giovanni Apap and his wife Marianne Grimes. The youngest of five siblings, Willie Apap was the brother of acclaimed sculptor Vincent Apap and musician Joseph Apap.
Willie Apap spent time in Rome and was known for his portraits, religious works and landscapes. He employed the unique technique of bands of ‘strisce’ (bands of light) in his paintings. He died on 3 February 1970. A recent exhibition of Willie Apap’s works was hosted by Rome’s Palazzo Valentini in November 2023.
