A British army soldier, in red military jacket with high collar and gold braiding, stands on a track or roadway. He is depicted facing to the viewer’s right with his right hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Two other soldiers are depicted on far left, walking away from the viewer, towards more marching soldiers led by an officer on horseback. Another lone soldier is visible on right of picture, apparently loading a musket.
Artist: Robert Richard Scanlan. Scanlan was born in Dublin in 1801. He exhibited portraits at the Royal Hibernian Academy (1826–1864). Scanlan was Master of the Cork School of Design for three years from 1853. Although he spent much of his career in England, he periodically returned to ireland. Scanlan exhibited at the Royal Academy, London between 1837 and 1859. He died in 1876.
