Untitled.

Woman in profile looking towards viewer’s right. She is dressed in classical Grecian attire and her left arm is raised. Artist: Adam Buck (‘Buck’ at bottom left). Buck was an Regency portrait and miniature painter. He was born in Cork in 1859 to a family of silversmiths. In 1787 he painted a family portrait of the Edgeworths of Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford. It includes the novelist Maria Edgeworth, a contempory of Jane Austen. Buck emigrated to London in 1795 where he was a favourite of both the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and the Duke of York. He enjoyed a long and prolific career and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy over a period of 30 years.

Buck had a love of the Antique, especially the art of Greece and Rome. this inspired him to record images from Greek Vases, resulting in 157 large drawings now preserved in Trinity College Library, Dublin. His own designs were inspired by classical pieces such as these and were adapted for the decoration of contemporary ceramics and were popular as prints. Buck died in 1833.
